Well, fuck!

That’s what I said when I read my most recent email from Dr. Y’s nurse:

“YOU DAY 3 LAB WORK CAME BACK AND THE RESULTS SHOW AND ELEVATED FSH AND THE AMH IS LESS THATN 0.03. IT WOULD BE BEST IF YOU CAME IN AND HAD AN APPOINTMENT WITH DR Y. I WILL NOT HAVE ANY APPOINTMENTS UNTIL AFTER YOU RETURN FROM EUROPE. PLEASE CALL ME AT xxx-xxx–xxxx SO THAT WE CAN SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT”

Yes, she writes her emails all in caps like that, as if I needed any more reason to feel alarmed.

My AMH is less than 0.03. I didn’t know the test measured amounts that low.

In what feels like another lifetime, I once wrote a long post about what AMH (and FSH and estradiol) mean for fertility.

Here’s a summary of my results the four times I’ve taken these tests. Prior to yesterday, 0.17 ng/mL was the lowest AMH of anyone I know in real life (including my Resolve support group).

  1/26/13 5/4/13 4/24/15 10/8/16
estradiol (E2) 24.6 pg/mL 27.2 pg/mL 23 pg/mL 20 pg/mL
follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) 13.7 mIU/mL 13.5 mIU/mL 9.7 mIU/mL 17.7 mIU/mL
anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) 0.17 ng/mL 0.22 ng/mL 0.31 ng/mL <0.03 ng/mL

I’m feeling pretty hopeless at the moment.

At least I get to go to Rome on Sunday.

  2. I’m so sorry to hear this. Hopefully your trip takes your mind off of the result and you can come back to it upon your return. Enjoy Rome, I love it there!

A friend of mine conceived with undetectable AMH. She had success with acupuncture and diet changes when Ivf failed multiple times. I know this is discouraging news but this doesn’t mean there aren’t any good eggs left. I’m thinking about you and sending good vibes (& happy to share the diet info if you’re interested.).

  5. I’d like to second the comment above. I know that you’re scientifically-minded, but I think that Chinese medicine really has the better treatment options for low AMH. My level improved significantly with acupuncture and herbal medicine (over 1), but dropped again to close to your level after another miscarriage (0.08). I’ll be re-testing again soon and will see if months of herbal medicine therapy has made a dent. Feel free to email me if you want more details. Know that you’re not alone in this crappy boat…

Any notion of what normal cycle-to-cycle variance might be? I have no clue what’s typical, but my AMH fluctuated ~0.75 ng/mL over 7-8 readings taken over 2 years, and no one batted an eye. It’s possible that you’re not seeing a trend, but rather noise.

Please don’t let this ruin your trip. Also, Shantuck is right – I’ve seen a few success stories with undetectable AMH as well. My AMH results came back even lower than yours last February – my AMH was 0.00. Literally 0.00. The lab had to run it twice to be sure and it was the lowest the tech and RE had ever seen. The weird thing is my AFC is is anywhere from 1-6. My last cycle was 35 days. It really doesn’t make sense. In any case, have a wonderful trip!

I conceived my now 18 month old with this exact AMH measurement – actually it was a result of less than 0.03 so I don’t know what it actually was. I also never responded to medication and conceived naturally. Wishing you the best.

  9. My AMH when last tested (2 years ago?) was 0.2 pM which is equivalent to 0.03 ng/mL. That was back when I wasn’t bleeding though. More recently I have had regular periods though, so who knows what it might be now. It is scientifically documented that women with low (even undetectable) AMH can get pregnant and have successful live births. When I asked a doctor about this he was discouraging because my FSH is also high (around 50). Yours is not that high though! The AMH test is still questioned for its clinical utility.
In short, don’t worry too much, and just take care of yourself. Breathe 🙂
